I had a hard time explaining what I thought of Eastern Promises. Then I went back to watch the review from Ebert and Roeper and they summed it up perfectly as a “weirdly formulaic genre piece.” There’s a lot of great stuff here, including the performances by Viggo Mortensen and Armin Mueller-Stahl and some stylish scenes of graphic violence, all trapped in a very straight-forward Russian mob genre flick.

Once again, here are our favorite movies of 2007, so far.  Since we all have such busy social lives, our goal has always been to see the year’s top movies (or at least those perceived as such by the critical community) by the time the Oscars roll around.  Meaning the lists below aren’t necessarily complete.  And we also haven’t seen all the same movies yet.  Meaning that too much analysis on our lists probably isn’t helpful.  It is interesting to note, though, that our tastes aren’t as different as we might like to think.  And that we seem to hold this year’s comedies (especially if you throw in dramedies)  in particularly high regard.
