With all the awards and nominations rolling in, the Grouches decided to look at the 8 big categories, predict who we think will win the Oscar, and jibber jabber a bit about the nominees. Next up is Best Director.

These predictions were made before the Golden Globes.

Brian: Paul Thomas Anderson
Adam: Tim Burton
John: Joen and Ethan Coen
Jared: Paul Thomas Anderson

A nice diverse set of picks here. With No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood seemingly the Best Picture front-runners, likewise the Coens and Anderson are probably front-runners. But the Picture race is a lot less obvious than in recent years and Julian Schnabel took the Golden Globe for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

The other Golden Globe nominees were Burton, the Coens, Ridley Scott for American Gangster, and Joe Wright for Atonement. Meanwhile, the Directors Guild has nominated Anderson, the Coens, Schnabel, Tony Gilroy for Michael Clayton, and Sean Penn for Into the Wild. So there are a lot of directors in the running here. The Globes gave Atonement a boost with a Best Drama Picture win, perhaps signaling that the film is struggling less than the guild nominees would suggest. Sweeney Todd likewise got some Globe love despite being virtually absent from other precursor awards. Wright and Burton probably got a boost. This is definitely a wide-open race.
